A Chemical Peel

A Chemical Peel
A mild to moderate chemical peel uses glycolic or alpha-hydroxy acid to exfoliate aged and damaged skin, allowing new skin to regenerate and take its place. It reduces fine lines, age spots, acne & whitening.

Chemical peels are usually performed on an outpatient basis and do not require any anesthesia. A series of three to five peels, performed in two-week intervals, may be required to achieve desirable results.

Filler Injections

Filler Injections
Used to "fill out" the wrinkles and furrows in the face, fillers are often used for ares around the mouth, nose and cheeks, as well as for sculpting lips, adding volume and diminishing fine lines. Hyaluronic acid is a popular component of many fillers. This biodegradable gel is injected into target areas using a fine needle.

Local anesthesia may be administered to avoid and redness in the area of injection. After the injections, the resolvable fillers generally last between six and nine months, after which a top-up is generally required to maintain the results.

Laser Resurfacing

Laser Resurfacing
This laser treatment helps rectify superficial to moderate facial wrinkles, mild surface scars, skin discoloration, and sun-damaged skin in delicate areas such as around the eyes and mouth. General anesthesia is required, as the ablative laser resurfacing removes the whole depth of the skin from the epidermis down to the dermis - a process that can be rather painful!

Following an ablative laser resurfacing, doctors will advise you to rest for about 7-10 days. During the recovery process, the skin is typically red or pink (a condition that can last anywhere from several days to a few months), and crusting may occur.

A Surgical Facelift

Considered major surgery, a facelift is the gold standard for the treatment of moderate to severe wrinkles, jowls and neck folds, and a sagging chin. The patient will be under general anaesthetic, and surgery usually lasts between three and four hours. Patients will be required to be admitted to the hospital for about three days.

In the procedure, incisions are made above the hairline at the temples, extending behind the earlobe to the lower scalp. The underlying muscles are tightened, the skin pulled back and the excess skin removed.

Full recover usually takes about three weeks.

Do you have Sensitive Skin?

If you relate to at least three of the following symptoms, you may need to consult a dermatologist (Dr Ranjit Skin Specialist "Highly Recommended") to get recommendation for a skincare switch.

  • Your skin gets irritated and inflamed when you wear fabrics that are not so soft to the touch such as wool or linen and the symptoms lasts a few days.
  • Alcohol consumption and spicy foods make your skin flush quickly and excessively.
  • Certain fragrances and metals such as nickel make your skin itch where they touch.
  • You experience breakouts when you use cleansers or lotions with preservatives, fragrance or that are oil-based.
  • Your skin easily gets aggravated by exposure to the sun, cold, humidity or even wind. It stays that way for few days after exposure.
  • Even if you don't scratch a mozzie bite, the welt remains on your skin for a number of days.

Treatments for Acne Scars

Treatments for Acne Scars

A number of treatments are available for acne scars. The type of treatment selected should be the one that is best for you in terms of your type of skin, the cost, what you want the treatment to accomplish, and the possibility that some types of treatment may result in more scarring if you are very susceptible to scar formation.
You can use Snail Cream to prevent and repair acne scars and/or seek surgical treatments.
A decision to seek Aesthetics treatment for acne scars depends on:
The way you feel about scars. Do acne scars psychologically or emotionally affect your life? Are you willing to "live with your scars" and wait for them to fade over time? These are personal decisions only you can make.
The severity of your scars. Is scarring substantially disfiguring, even by objective assessment?
A dermatologist’s expert opinion as to whether scar treatment is justified in your particular case, and what scar treatment will be most effective for you.
Before committing to treatment of acne scars, you should have a frank discussion with your dermatologist/aesthetician regarding those questions, and any others you feel are important. You need to tell the dermatologist/aesthetician how you feel about your scars. The dermatologist/aesthetician needs to conduct a full examination and determine whether treatment can, or should, be undertaken.
The objective of scar treatment is to give the skin a more acceptable physical appearance. Total restoration of the skin, to the way it looked before you had acne, is often not possible, but scar treatment does usually improve the appearance of your skin.
The scar treatments that are currently available include:
1) Collagen injection. Collagen, a normal substance of the body, is injected under the skin to "stretch" and "fill out" certain types of superficial and deep soft scars. Collagen treatment usually does not work as well for ice-pick scars and keloids. Collagen derived from cows or other non-human sources cannot be used in people with autoimmune diseases. Human collagen or fascia is helpful for those allergic to cow-derived collagen. Cosmetic benefit from collagen injection usually lasts 3 to 6 months. Additional collagen injections to maintain the cosmetic benefit are done at additional cost.

2) Autologous fat transfer. Fat is taken from another site on your own body and prepared for injection into your skin. The fat is injected beneath the surface of the skin to elevate depressed scars. This method of autologous (from your own body) fat transfer is usually used to correct deep contour defects caused by scarring from nodulocystic acne. Because the fat is reabsorbed into the skin over a period of 6 to 18 months, the procedure usually must be repeated. Longer lasting results may be achieved with multiple fat-transfer procedures.

3) Dermabrasion (ATHENA GLOW). This is thought to be the most effective treatment for acne scars. Under local anesthetic, a high-speed brush or fraise used to remove surface skin and alter the contour of scars. Superficial scars may be removed altogether, and deeper scars may be reduced in depth. Dermabrasion does not work for all kinds of scars; for example, it may make ice-pick scars more noticeable if the scars are wider under the skin than at the surface. In darker-skinned people, dermabrasion may cause changes in pigmentation that require additional treatment.

4) Microdermabrasion. This new technique is a surface form of dermabrasion. Rather than a high-speed brush, microdermabrasion uses aluminum oxide crystals passing through a vacuum tube to remove surface skin. Only the very surface cells of the skin are removed, so no additional wound is created. Multiple procedures are often required but scars may not be significantly improved.

5) Laser Treatment. Lasers of various wavelength and intensity may be used to recontour scar tissue and reduce the redness of skin around healed acne lesions. The type of laser used is determined by the results that the laser treatment aims to accomplish. Tissue may actually be removed with more powerful instruments such as the carbon dioxide laser. In some cases, a single treatment is all that will be necessary to achieve permanent results. Because the skin absorbs powerful bursts of energy from the laser, there may be post-treatment redness for several months.

6)Skin Surgery. Some ice-pick scars may be removed by "punch" excision of each individual scar. In this procedure each scar is excised down to the layer of subcutaneous fat; the resulting hole in the skin may be repaired with sutures or with a small skin graft. Subcision is a technique in which a surgical probe is used to lift the scar tissue away from unscarred skin, thus elevating a depressed scar.

7) Dermarollers - Studies have also shown that derma rollers are oftentimes a better treatment than dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser resurfacing. They are proven to be just effective in their ability to stimulate collagen and elastin production. Regular use of dermaroller can thicken skin, smooth scars of all sizes and erase wrinkles.
Skin grafting may be necessary under certain conditions—for example, sometimes dermabrasion unroofs massive and extensive tunnels (also called sinus tracts) caused by inflammatory reaction to sebum and bacteria in sebaceous follicles. Skin grafting may be needed to close the defect of the unroofed sinus tracts.
Treatment of keloids. Surgical removal is seldom if ever used to treat keloids. A person whose skin has a tendency to form keloids from acne damage may also form keloids in response to skin surgery. Sometimes keloids are treated by injecting steroid drugs into the skin around the keloid. Topical retinoic acid may be applied directly on the keloid. In some cases the best treatment for keloids in a highly susceptible person is no treatment at all.

Acne Scars??

Occurrence of Scars

The occurrence and incidence of scarring is still not well understood, however. There is considerable variation in scarring between one person and another, indicating that some people are more prone to scarring than others. Scarring frequently results from severe inflammatory nodule cystic acne that occurs deep in the skin. But, scarring also may arise from more superficial inflamed lesions.
Nodule or sometimes called an acne "cyst": It is the most severe form of acne lesion. A nodule is a large, deep-seated, pus-filled, often painful lump. Acne with nodules often results in permanent scarring and requires treatment by a physician.
The life history of scars is also not well understood. Some people bear their acne scars for a lifetime with little change in the scars, but in other people the skin undergoes some degree of remodeling and acne scars diminish in size.
People also have differing feelings about acne scars. Scars of more or less the same size that may be psychologically distressing to one person may be accepted by another person as "not too bad." The person who is distressed by scars is more likely to seek treatment to moderate or remove the scars.

Prevention of Acne Scars

As discussed in the previous section on Causes of Acne Scars, the occurrence of scarring is different in different people. Who will scar, how extensive or deep scars will be, and how long scars will persist is quite unpredictable. It is also difficult to predict how successfully scars can be prevented by effective acne treatment.
Nevertheless, the only sure method of preventing or limiting the extent of scars is to treat acne early in its course, and as long as necessary. The more the inflammation can be prevented or moderated, the more likely it is that scars can be prevented.

Mole Removal

At times some of the moles need to be removed. The reason may be cosmetic, or a suspicion that a particular mole may be a skin cancer. Other than taking a wider margin around the mole in cases of suspected skin cancer the procedure is essentially the same.

PROCEDURE DESCRIPTION
A local anesthetic agent is injected around the mole and the lesion (mole ) is surgically removed. The wound is then closed with sutures. It is advisable to send the specimen (mole) for pathological examination to know the exact nature of the lesion. Sometimes, in suspected skin cancers, if the removal is incomplete, the procedure may have to be repeated for the complete removal.

SIDE EFFECTS:
The undesirable side effects are resultant scarring, possibility of recurrence, and sometimes keloid (raised, thick scar) formation. Though it is unpredictable that how a particular scar will heal, most of the scars heal well, without leaving a noticeable mark. Most of these procedures are done under local anesthesia in an office setting, requiring practically no time of work. Pain is also a very slight requiring mild analgesics.

Pixel Laser Resurfacing

Pixel Laser Resurfacing

The Pixel Laser Surfacing procedure uses an Erbium Yag laser in resurfacing the skin. This treatment is state of the art, and is effective without the use of a CO2 laser and is without too much pain and downtime.

The Pixel laser technology tightens up skin on the neck, eyelids and works with overall skin quality by manipulating with the less than tight collagen fibers in the skin, while transitioning new cells. It indicates improvement in tone and texture of the skin, by reducing and almost removing discoloration due to age, UV ray exposure, while decreasing visible pore size, hyperpigmentation, and improving acne scars.

Usually completed in little under 20 minutes the results have been equal to those of traditional laser resurfacing techniques. The procedure prides itself on being performed with minimal downtime and discomfort, treatment protocols call for a series of 5 treatments, 2-4 weeks apart.

The technology is known as ablative fractional technology. Skin is treated by removing tissue via a dot Pixel hand-piece. Pixel technology is performed as a localized or "scattered" ablation vs. total ablation as seen in other technology. The Pixel treats a small fraction of the skin, in a particular manner, where in which the tiny pixelations of skin are lasered within the assigned zone. The Pixel allows about 65% of the lasered skin to remain "as is" and untreated around the Pixel therapy treated areas. The untouched skin may then act as a reservoir for the promotion of rapid healing to the newly lasered skin, reducing the downtime significantly.

Skin resurfacing occurs as the laser passes over the affected skin to remove damaged outer layers and, through heat, stimulates the production of collagen and new skin cells in the underlying layers.

The Pixel technology allows for a smoother, tighter, and more improved skin texture after just several sessions, if not visible in the first session. The technology has demonstrated a triggering of biological responses that may lead to collagen remodeling; responsible for the smoothing of fine lines and wrinkles, improvement of laxity and discoloration.

The Pixel technology has been shown to improve the appearance of difficult to treat acne and keloid scars with just several treatments. The improvement that has been seen with tissue laxity, whether around the mouth, eyelids, or the neck, it is an excellent alternative to botox for several skin types.

Indications:
  • Lessens acne or surgical scars
  • Treats pigment related conditions
  • Evens out uneven skin tone and smoothes skin texture
  • Rejuvenates skin
  • Lessens wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduces stretch marks
The Pixel laser resurfacing protocol has been shown to be so gentle that treatment can translate to those hard to treat areas once prohibitive by traditional resurfacing procedures, while being effective in such a short amount of time.
